How Indiana is Limiting Miami Threes
16 May 2012 | 12:18 pmThe Miami HEAT's offense runs like a well-oiled machine when it is generating three-pointers, but not just any threes. It needs to create open, efficient, assisted threes, and knowing this, the Indiana Pacers have schemed to take those away, a scheme that starts with how they defend LeBron James and Dwyane Wade's pick-and-rolls. -

Whether or Not to Start LeBron at PF
14 May 2012 | 10:49 pmThe Miami HEAT outscored the Indiana Pacers by 15 points with LeBron James playing power forward in Game 1, but the decision as to whether or not to start him at that position in the absence of Chris Bosh is hardly as simple as going by the numbers. We ask the why, and why not, of the potential move. -

15 May 2012 | 4:13 amNot long left to go until Carnival Breeze is ready to sail passengers to some amazing destinations. The 130,000 ton Fun Ship recently passed her important sea trials off the coast of Italy and is only weeks away from her inaugural sailing. Carnival Breeze will be one of the biggest within the Carnival Cruise Lines fleet. She will have enough space for 3,690 passengers along with an array of exciting facilities on board. I suppose that’s why Carnival are dubbed the “Fun Ships”. The Carnival Breeze has been taking shape for the last two years in the famous Fincantieri shipyard near… -

Marlins Ballpark An “Only in Miami” Experience
2 May 2012 | 5:48 amThe Miami Marlins, with their new name, colors and design, have clearly taken themselves from a regional team to one that is distinctly Miami. The signs in the stadium switch from English to Spanish. The ticket windows read “Tickets” and “Boletos.” And the food is exactly what you’d find in its neighboring streets of Little Havana. But the Miaminess of the new stadium goes far beyond its bilingual signs, bright color scheme and skyline view. The new park gives the visitor a variety of lessons about what this city is all about, and what it means to live here. -

Canyon Ranch Miami-Strong Appeal for Second Home Buyers
11 May 2012 | 8:07 amBuyers in a certain price point looking for an oceanfront condo in Miami Beach as a second home in South Florida come with specific wants and needs. Generally speaking buyers I work with want a new building, great amenities, building that sits directly on the sand, good location and an upscale environment. There are choices. In South Beach such as the Continuum , prices will run well over $1000 square foot. The other fewer new wonderful buildings such as Caribbean, Mei, and Bath Club have very few units available to choose from. The Caribbean, a fantastic buildings also boasts sales… -
South Florida Oceanfront Condo Post Season Activity
29 Apr 2012 | 11:45 amSome of the buyers that I work with have the mindset to wait until after the peak season to move forward with buying an oceanfront condo. The thought process is that there may be more motivation from the sellers now that South Florida is in a “slow season”. There has not been a slow down in sales along the coast for new oceanfront condos. In fact, there is an increase in activity. Here are some statistics that reflect the Post Season Sales activity in Miami Beach and up the coast including Sunny, Isles, Bal Harbour, Hollywood -Hallandale, and Fort Lauderdale. The information… -
Sunny Isles Ultra Large Ultra Luxury Penthouses
11 Mar 2012 | 12:37 pmI was just recently working with a buyer in search of an exceptionally large penthouse in Sunny Isles. There are a few to choose from in Sunny Isles. The fabulous spaces are triplex residences with interior elevators. These unique spaces to choose from are available in various stages of completion. Today there are 7 unique oceanfront condominiums in Sunny Isles that are over 5000 square foot of interior space. Four of those are in the Jade Beach or Jade Ocean. There are two available in Jade Beach that are over 8200 square feet of interior space with interior glass and steel… -
Beach Club Hallandale, Trump Hollywood and Apogee Beach- All Selling
11 Feb 2012 | 11:55 amI have been working with an out of town buyer looking for a vacation condo on the ocean. He likes the Beach Club in Hallandale . He is looking for a 2 bedroom plus den, large square footage and the condo must have great views. The building must be relatively new and have great amenities. All this for under $800,000. There are not too many buildings that will satisfy this criteria along the coast of South Florida. Several of the options that we selected went to contract before we even were able to view them. It is amazing how fast the market is moving in this price range with this… -

A Transit Miami Conversation with James Howard Kunstler
14 May 2012 | 11:19 pmDuring the Congress for the New Urbanism’s annual conference, CNU 20: The New World, held last week in West Palm Beach, I had the opportunity to interview author James Howard Kunstler. Kunstler is the author of The Long Emergency, The Geography of Nowhere, the World Made by Hand novels and is a leading critic and social commentator on the American landscape of suburban sprawl. Over lunch in downtown West Palm’s new urbanism-inspired development, CityPlace, I pried Jim about bus travel in Florida, nostalgia for transit, the state of our current rail system, his own oil paintings… -
Bike to Work Day 2012

Time to give yourself a break from the self-imposed captivity of the automobile and reintroduce yourself to that two-wheeled stallion eagerly waiting to transport you to wherever your heart desires (and, in this case, even that place you may not wish to be: work). Friday, May 18 is National Bike to Work Day! In fact, this entire week (May 14 – May 18) is National Bike to Work Week, one of many events being held in celebration of National Bike Month. (Here in Florida, our official Bike Month is celebrated in March.) The City of Miami’s Bicycle… -

For those of you new to the game, the congress is a meeting of the brightest American urban minds. We commiserate, share the work of the past year, and create new connections with other like-minded professionals. If you have never been to a Congress it can be overwhelming at first. For many of us the Congress can feel like a family reunion – a time to celebrate the work of the past year with colleagues, and to reaffirm our commonly held beliefs in the principles of traditional town design. This year the Congress is being held in West Palm Beach, and Transit Miami will be there all week to cover the events in a live blogging partnership with Next…

Erik Fresen's Loosey Goosey Campaign Report. By Geniusofdespair
16 May 2012 | 6:04 amI always enjoy looking at campaign reports and Rep. Erik's Fresen's report did not disappoint. He has a line $419.45 to Millie Fresen (5/10) and another for $509.04 (9/7) for "Various Expenses" and one to himself (6/27) for $447.34 - again various expenses. Like what are these "various expenses"? On 9/30 she got another reimbursement for expenses in the amount of $318.47. He had an expense for his cell phone for 5 months for $920.96. He also includes his wife's cell phone for $690.38. Didn't he ever hear of a family plan? Three weeks later his wife had another cell phone bill for $492.12 and… -
Can Government Do Anything Right? ... by gimleteye
16 May 2012 | 5:48 amYesterday, the county environmental regulatory agency, DERM, was folded deep into a managerial reorganization recommended by Mayor Carlos Gimenez and approved by the county commission. The Miami Herald lamented, "Don't abandon the environment", on its editorial page. The agency "already is a shadow of its former self". DERM was created to protect Miami-Dade's unique natural resources, including proximity to two national parks and a national marine sanctuary. Its exile begs the question: Can government do anything right? In the same editorial, the Herald offered support for one-stop shop… -
Florida City's Convoluted or Crooked Deal. By Geniusofdespair
15 May 2012 | 2:39 pmI suspect kickbacks are in the works for someone in Government or is this just a very bad deal? The property appraiser estimated the worth of this property in 2010 as $601,440. Florida City paid $3,000,000 for it 10/2010.It sold for $3,000,000 in August 2005 to Geo Group (they manage correctional facilities) -- that is the TOP of the market. So why did Florida City pay so much 5 years later? Did the owner pave it with gold? The previous owner submitted all the plans. I guess they will manage it. So what does the Geo Group do, buy expensive land and then sell it to a… -
Floating in a sea of sewage ... by gimleteye
15 May 2012 | 6:13 amThe news that the federal government is in intensive settlement discussions with Miami-Dade County over a sewage system prone to multi-million gallon leaks is no surprise to the bloggers at Eyeonmiami. We've been tracking the smell of politics ruined by sewage for years and years.Where to begin? How about with discredited former county commissioner Natacha Seijas and the propensity of county commissioners to give each other high-fives for shifting the costs of needed infrastructure to future generations of taxpayers? Nearly a decade ago, Miami-Dade County was seeking a consumptive use…

Tom Cruise addresses gay rumors in Playboy

The actor, who turns 50 in July, got candid in the article, even discussing persistent rumors that he is gay. “I hear it, I read it, I get it,” he says, “But life is not a matter of trying to prove anything to anybody.’’ The Rock of Ages star is proud of his work ethic and believe that’s the key to his success and allowed him to overcome the negativity. “Does refuting things help? Not really. There comes a point when you just have to go,… -

Mothers Day ups and downs
13 May 2012 | 11:03 pmSo, Mothers Day. I had to make breakfast for everyone. The boys couldn't get along and kept bonking each other on the head. My husband took us to the mall to have me pick out a gift for his mother. Lunch was rushed, we were late to meet with the in-laws, and dinner at the restaurant was awful. But I got to go stroll Hollywood Beach with my guys and feel the soft breezes. I got to sleep in past 10 am. My family gave me a new suitcase and a gardening book and made me cards. Several friends or family members texted me Mothers Day wishes. I guess I should count my blessings. Hosted by Krystyn at… -
I went to Mom 2.0 and all I got was a Dove T-shirt ... but really so much more
7 May 2012 | 6:13 pmThis past weekend I experienced the best blogging conference I've attended yet -- the Mom 2.0 Summit. It was an hour's drive away from my home, so like a nerd I drove there each day instead of shelling out big bucks to stay at the Ritz-Carlton. (Which was fabulous, of course, and I'm sure worth every cent they asked for.) Why was this the best conference so far? It's the only one where I got to meet The Bloggess. Who autographed her bestselling book, Let's Pretend This Never Happened, which I am giving to Heather at Cool Zebras because I know she is going to looooove it. It's the only… -
You didn't think I could let World Penguin Day just slip by...?
25 Apr 2012 | 1:55 pmYou know my boys love penguins. Scratch that, they are obsessed with penguins. Plush penguins come out of the bedrooms with the boys when they wake up in the morning, most days the penguins go to school or on errands, and the boys play with them all day and take them back to bed with them at night. This is no small thing. There are 25 penguins in my house. I counted. And each one has a name. That doesn't include the penguin figurines, or penguin T-shirts (seven) or penguin blanket. 30 Mar 2012 | 6:08 amMy stepmother had me cooking from the time I was six years old. Oh sure, at that time she just gave me an Easy Bake Oven, but I know her designs from the beginning were to pretend cooking was fun so I would eventually take over and she wouldn't have to cook any more. From helping to can summer vegetables to preparing the cakes she would professionally decorate and sell, to pulling all-nighters when my stepmother eventually started her own catering company, I was her sidekick in the kitchen. All of that training paid off now that I have a child with multiple food allergies and have to come up… -
An appeal
16 Mar 2012 | 10:47 amDear James Farr, Creative Genius Master of Everything Cool,Your Trains-formers videos are more awesome than a robot fighting machine that also makes cotton candy riding a mag-lev train to a space station in a galaxy far, far away. It's a sad day in Sodor because my two-year-old (whose morning routine includes requesting, in his words, "Thomas Prime") and five-year-old couldn't see their cherished movies due to HiT's copyright claim. ("This is really going to aggravate a number of legal departments!")According to my sons, here is a list of things that are awesome:TrainsCarsRacing trains and…

Rewarding Success: Part II Beliefs
19 Apr 2012 | 10:03 amIn the first Part of the Rewarding Success series we discussed attitudes and the effects of a poor attitude. In this post we will examine beliefs which are an acceptance that a statement or that something is true. Our beliefs dictate our attitudes towards people, and subjects; it is what our body acts on because we hold that concept to be true. If you believe your car is not going to start there is a strong chance that you won’t try and start it because you hold that concept to be true. Beliefs are probably the most important impediment in reaching goals or in striving to make something… -
Rewarding Success: Part I Attitude
18 Apr 2012 | 8:51 amIt is very difficult to become the thing you despise the most or have negative views of yet many people become the victims of their own thought process. Still, most people want to be successful but they do not realize that success comes from within and it is a product of how you view successful people. I was raised blue collar and I reflect on many of the conversations that my friends and I would have at a young age as it pertains to wealthy or successful people. In many of those conversations the tone eluded to successful people having some special privileges and therefore society should… -
Not for Profit and for profit Partnerships 2
15 Mar 2012 | 9:30 amContinuing with our series on the not for profit for profit partnerships; I find that many people I talk with are amazed by this concept. Many of your credit counseling not for profit agencies are in some way affiliated with a for profit company. It is a relationship that works because helping people is what all businesses try to do whether you are selling furniture or trying to help people find the correct financing. What has puzzled me is that hedge funds, private equity, and venture capitalist have not sought these relationships in an attempt to become more social minded, enhance their… -
Not for profit and for profit Partnerships
13 Mar 2012 | 11:12 amThe purpose of a not for profit organization is to do good, make an impact, improve a community or communities which can manifest itself in numerous ways. We must realize that everyone is a stakeholder in the economy and we all have a vested interest in America performing at its finest whether they are a trader, degree or no degree. Most Americans are tied to capital markets through their retirement or some other vehicle and they are all looking for some sort of insurance. There is doing “good” in the community which directly impacts people’s lives, and there is doing “good” in… -
Women and Poverty
12 Mar 2012 | 2:23 pmIt seems like we were beginning to reduce the poverty rate in the U.S. by the end of the 1990s. Then as the year 2000 came around poverty levels started rising again. By 1999 the overall poverty rate had dropped to 9.3 percent for all families, 4.9 percent for married couples without children, 11.8 percent for male households and 27.8 percent for female households. In 2010 the numbers were much higher where all families were at 11.7 percent, married couples without children were at 6.2 percent, and male households rose to 15.8 percent and women households was at a staggering 31.6percent. In…
