Hello all!  I’m back to fill you in on the rest of the Miami story.  When I left you last, I had been stuffing myself to the gills at Ola (still thinking about it – yum!).  For the last few days in Miami, I was pretty much on my own – as Todd was at his conference.  So I filled my days with beach and pool-side activities, got a little shopping in and read three whole books!  I also got a chance to go to Sushi Samba, a restaurant located on Lincoln Ave.  My friend and former roommate, Nina, had mentioned it to me so I thought I would pop in for dinner after a busy…

  • Miami Beach Real Estate: Luxury Waterfront Stats for 3Q 2009

    Kevin Tomlinson
    20 Nov 2009 | 6:39 pm
Much like the high-end condos, Miami Beach waterfront homes had a tough go of it in the early part of this year.  But, all told, the impact of the real estate correction will be most felt in the luxury waterfront sector.  Our first ‘big‘ sale didn’t come until June, and still stands unrivaled. Venetian Islands: Whaaa? What really raised my eyebrow was the lack of sales on the Venetian Islands for the first half of the year.  During the first half of 2008, there were 15 sales on the Venetian Islands, and only four sales for the same time period this year, for a total of…

This has been a very interesting year.  I’ve said before that the SoFi neighborhood in South Beach has weathered the real estate storm like a champ.  Our busiest time of the year begins with Art Basel at the beginning of December and continues well into June. For the previous few years, the week of Art Basel has been incredible.  Last year was the year of NO action; and it only got worse from there.  While inventory languished on the market for the first half of the year, sellers seemed to hear the message.  List prices dropped, and dropped fast. Between May and September six…

After honking at me to move and me pointing out that it was a bike lane, when the light turned green and I didn’t immediately move he got upset. Words were exchanged, ending with him accelerating to hit me. I swerved into another lane between cars. He followed partially, just enough to hit me…

Yesterday I posted a blog regarding the lack of crosswalks in Downtown.  I took it upon myself during lunchtime today to count the number of pedestrians that crossed the street on SE 3rd Avenue and SE 1st St. were a crosswalk currently does not exist. If there was ever any doubt whether a crosswalk is needed, today’s results overwhelmingly favor pedestrian demand for a crosswalk. Within a 5 minute time span, 60 pedestrians crossed the street where there isn’t a crosswalk!  If a pedestrian were to get hit here, some would blame the jaywalker. I wouldn’t, I’d hold those that designed…

    17 Nov 2009 | 12:39 pm
FDOT just recently repaved a section of Biscayne Boulevard in Downtown.  I’m not sure why, but several major intersections were left without a pedestrian crosswalk. I really can’t think of a reason as to why FDOT did not take this opportunity to include 4 crosswalks at every intersection.  There is enough density and pedestrian activity to justify 4 crosswalks at every intersection.  Aside from helping pedestrians cross three lanes of fast moving traffic, crosswalks serve as traffic calming devices as well. To make matters even worse, the intersection on Biscayne Blvd and NE 4th street…

In an interview with the New Times, the founder tells the story of Uranus: We came up with the idea a little over a year ago. We were painting my sister’s room in our underwear and were talking about our favorite planets. Somehow we got to talking about how it would be funny…

  • I Prefer the Southwest Scramble

    SCG
    19 Nov 2009 | 2:46 am
Traveling this week on business. USAIR instead of Southwest. The seats are more comfortable, but the service sucks. As does the boarding. If you’ve traveled on Southwest before you know they have an unusual boarding policy. No assigned seats. You get assigned a boarding group, A, B or C and you storm the plane and pick your own seat, while elbowing that little old lady out of your way and stepping on that screaming kid. But hey, you made it to your favorite window or aisle seat! The rest of the world allows you assigned seats.I’ve complained about Southwest before, but after flying…

ABC news has an interesting article about where the government says the stimulus money is going. The article is here. Apparently, there are several instances of “human error” on the recovery board’s website, such as $761,420 going to Arizona’s 15th congressional district, where at least 30 jobs were either created or saved. There is no 15th congressional district in Arizona. ABC news found numerous other inconsistencies. Which leads to this story I am about to tell. Without any bashing or name calling, I am just going to report the facts. I work at a college. Many…

ARTIFICIALLY DYED FLOWERS What is it with companies that dye real flowers? I was at the supermarket this morning and saw bunches of “fresh” flowers that were enhanced with artificial coloring. Some of them were an almost florescent orange, and some were neon green! These are flowers folks, you sell/buy them because of their natural beauty! Why inject artificial crap into nature? It sucks. ARTIFICIAL FLOWERS Which bring me to artificial flowers. Those plastic or silk fake flowers. Again, why? Real plants are real, live, breathing soul enhancing organisms. Plastic is artificial…

    14 Nov 2009 | 3:08 am
It is almost 5 AM in the morning. Saturday morning. For a five day a week guy, what could be better? With a mug of strong coffee in hand, I sit in my darkened back yard amid the butterfly garden, whose glory still sleeps. November 13th, and the temperature is slightly below 60 degrees. After an extended South Florida summer, this slight dip in the mercury refreshes my soul. A gentle movement of the air, not strong enough to even call itself a breeze, trickles through the darkened flowers and green leaves, and brushes my face like a dream. Refreshing. Spirit cleansing. Gazing upward into the…

We quote the Miami Herald a lot, it is good to see they also read our blog.BTW don't bother doing a search on line. I did one and couldn't find the article, under Eyeonmiami, Gimleteye or Alan Farago. Even the author's name, Edward Schumacher-Matos, had "0" results for this column in a "Search" of the Miami Herald. Here is what Schumacher-Matos said about Eyeonmiami in an article titled: Still

    21 Nov 2009 | 9:27 pm
I have been hearing rumblings about Senate candidate Crist becoming a Democrat. That would save me the trouble of registering as a Republican which was my plan in an effort to stymie that scary Rubio from winning the primary. We all know that the radicals vote in primaries. I don't think there is a Democrat running that could beat either Crist or Rubio, thus, I would much prefer Crist as my

Jimbo does have a way of stating the truth...eventually. Not saying he is a liar because he is not, but he does have colorful stories and jokes that take you in circles sometimes but have a grain of truth at their core. In the final line in the Miami Herald article (and video) he said: "The still photographers don't come anymore because there's nothing there anymore."That is right Jimbo. The city

The PR says that the new Royal Caribbean "Oasis of the Seas" is five times larger than the Titanic. It has its own climate and Wikipedia page. It is a small floating city for 4500. I live in a city. Why would I pay, to go to sea in floating one? I look at this vessel, and all I can see is a market top. In fact, the ship was commissioned at the peak of the housing asset bubble in the US. Bigger

BY STEVE ROTHAUS, srothaus@MiamiHerald.com Several Jackson Memorial Hospital nurses personally apologized to Janice Langbehn, a Washington state lesbian who said a Jackson social worker wouldn't allow her to be with her dying partner in 2007. "We certainly are sorry for the pain and suffering she felt," said Martha Baker, a registered nurse and president of SEIU local 1991, the union representing about 5,000 doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals at Jackson. "I apologize," said registered nurse Norberto Molina, chairman of the union's gay Lavender…

News release from Equality Florida: (TALLAHASSEE) Equality Florida applauds the filing of the Competitive Workforce bill in the Florida House of Representative. House bill 391, filed by Rep. Kelly Skidmore, would add sexual orientation and gender identity to Florida’s civil rights statues. Currently, it is legal to discriminate against someone in employment, housing and public accommodations because that person is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). The bill would add these categories into laws that already protect Floridians based on race, age, disability, sex and religion. “I…

By MIN LEE, AP Entertainment Writer HONG KONG -- A prominent mainland Chinese director banned by Beijing from making movies brought his new gay romance film to Hong Kong on Friday for what is likely the last of a handful of screenings on his home soil. In 2006, China banned Lou Ye from shooting movies for five years after he screened "Summer Palace" at the Cannes Film Festival without government approval. In the film Lou tackled the Chinese military's brutal crackdown on pro-democracy student protesters at Beijing's Tiananmen Square in June 1989. Hundreds, possibly thousands, of…

The 40-year-old paper ceased operation under the weight of its parent company’s financial problems. Window Media’s financial condition and the exact reasons for closing the Washington Blade remain unclear. No statement has been issued by the former executives from Atlanta, Miami or New York regarding how the decision to abruptly shut down the publication was…

Mark’s List to launch magazine, newspaper after South Florida Blade publisher shuts down When publisher Window Media/Unite Media suddenly shut down this week, it also meant the end of longtime gay newspapers and magazines in South Florida, Atlanta, Houston and Washington, D.C. As I reported on Monday, Mark’s List immediately announced it would hire the old staffs of 411 magazine and South Florida Blade, and start new publications in their place. Now, the workers at Washington Blade – who recently celebrated the paper’s 40th anniversary -- have joined together and launched DC Agenda.

Two weeks later, he was running. He hasn't stopped. He goes to preschool two days a week. When I asked him what happened at school, he thought for a few seconds."Teacher says, 'No running!'"At least I know he's being honest. My boy may grow and change, but some things about him will probably never change.
