17 Jan 2012 | 10:08 amVideo by Alex Sator “It’s a chance for local kids to play on a national stage…Both teams are undefeated and ranked in their divisions. We’d like to say we are geniuses, but we’re not. We got lucky…A lot of these schools are used to playing their own kind because of leagues and geography. Half the fun of this event is playing somebody that there is no chance of playing any other time. “ Eric Horstman, President and Founder By Tim Langevin KETTERING – It wasn’t a thriller. My December
26 Jan 2012 | 1:48 pmA bright beautiful morning on Key Biscayne It’s January 2012. 2012. I can’t believe it. I have been intending to write about my experiences at the end of the year right after they happened…but I am a terrible procrastinator….!!! Shinn demo with Miami Kiteboarding My December started out with traveling down to Miami earlier than expected. I had planned to travel down on the 5th of December for my ITC (Instructor Training Course with the International Kiteboarding Organization), but discovered that Miami Kiteboarding was holding a Shinn demo the weekend prior. -
Senior Bowl Notes: South Roster: Day 3
26 Jan 2012 | 1:08 pmOffensive Line: Cordy Glenn (Georgia) was the clear offensive lineman winner today. He showed the ability to play outside at tackle as well as at guard today, and he was effective against every player except for Quinton Coples who was able to beat him on a couple of 1 on 1’s. He’s agile for his size and in talking to scouts they didn’t think his occasional waist-bending was a serious issue. He has the potential to play at four offensive lineman positions. He is strong enough and has a good enough anchor that he can recover if he’s initially pushed back, which enabled him to slow down… -

Money Can’t Buy You Love
18 Jan 2012 | 7:10 pmIt’s common for couples that once they break up, separate, or divorce that the person in the relationship that made the most paid some sort of alimony or child support to the other person. But what do you call it when you pay your boyfriend an amount that is more than he makes and is enough for him to take you out on your high maintenance dates? Pre-alimony? Allowance? It is being reported that Jeniffer Lopez is given her current boytoy, and backup dancer, Casper Smart an allowance of $10,000 a week. It is being reported that JLo’s love interest is receiving this allowance with… -

Louis Vuitton, Art Critic
30 Sep 2011 | 11:02 amI recently spotted this image of Chewy Vuitton, and image of the Chewbacca character from Star Wars in a Louis Vuitton pattern. I love the juxtaposition of a fashionista wookie but I’m reminded of how Louis Vuitton doesn’t appreciate art that uses the likeness of its products. Several years ago, Louis Vuitton sued and won against artist Nadia Plesner who created a political piece about the genocide in Darfur. The artwork by Nadia Plesner had images of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears alongside with starving children in Darfur holding a bag that resembles a Louis Vuitton bag. Chewy…

Sales Activity at Canyon Ranch- Case Study of Ocean Front Condos
21 Jan 2012 | 12:27 pmCanyon Ranch Miami Beach is a great building to look at as a case study of the sales activity that has occurred along the coast in South Florida over the past several months. As we have written and as it is published nationwide, South Florida sales performance and prices have outperformed every other real estate market. Canyon Ranch condominium sales performance is a great reflection of activity all along the coast especially in relatively new luxury oceanfront condominiums. The property consists of three… -

Luxury Oceanfront Condominiums in Boca Raton- What is Selling?
27 Sep 2011 | 6:10 pmThere are a handful of relatively newer luxury oceanfront condominium in Boca Raton. They are Addison on the Ocean, Aragon, Excelsior, Luxuria, One Thousand Ocean, and Presidential Place. On the west side of A1A is Mizner Grand worthy of inclusion. The readers of my blog know that I value the word luxury and use it sparingly. Quote of the Decade
27 Jan 2012 | 8:52 am“What this project would also do, is to reinforce exactly the growth pattern that failed Miami-Dade County, wrecked the Everglades, jeopardized thousands of acres of wetlands and farmland. You don’t get out of a ditch by digging the same ditch, deeper. But that is the kind of logic Miami-Dade lobbyists and appointees embraced, in the run-up to the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Watch what they do, now.” -Local blogging powerhouse GeniusofDespair from Eye On Miami on the proposed 5-year work plan of the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority which would… -

TM To MDX: Stop Westward Expansion
26 Jan 2012 | 11:03 amWe need your help now to protect the Everglades. Miami-Dade Expressway Authority is planning to expand the 836 Dolphin Expressway west toward Krome Avenue and then south to Tamiami Airport. This project would accelerate westward development, threaten agriculture, and threaten Everglades restoration. Please email written comments to tgarcia@mdxway.com by this Friday, January 27, 2012. Here’s a sample comment to cut and paste or put in your own words. I ask the MDX board to remove the 836/Dolphin Expressway Southwest Extension (project 83618) from its 5-year plan. I question the necessity… -
Movement for Miami’s First On-Street Bicycle Parking Corral Gaining Traction
26 Jan 2012 | 5:51 amMiami-Dade Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee Formally Endorses Project It may seem hard to believe but one particular Miami neighborhood has a parking problem – with bicycles! Miami’s Wynood Arts District, specifically the commercial district of NW 2nd Avenue between NW 20th street and NW 29th street is rapidly becoming a hub for Miami’s emerging cycling community. Several local businesses in the area cater to this diverse group, and the evidence is plainly visible. On any given day or evening, this stretch of NW 2nd Ave. is filled with bicycles. However, the growing number of…

Florida Sun-Sentinel = Sin-Sensational!
26 Jan 2012 | 8:52 amWe all know that news reporting in South Florida, if not America, is a lost and dead art. But there still is a need for citizens to be able to quickly see what is going on within our community. Sadly, one of the absolute worse “newspapers online” is the Florida Sun-Sentinel. They remind me of the old National Enquirer in their more disgusting days. Here are the main news stories on the front page of the Sin-Sensational website today as of 9:30 am today. I have highlighted what I consider to be not only not news, but just sensational stories, disgusting stories, trying to feed on… -

The MDX: Driving Miami into the abyss of more sprawl ... by gimleteye
27 Jan 2012 | 6:18 amThe board of the Miami Dade Expressway Authority, or MDX, is in the midst of approving the extension of the Dolphin Expressway/ SR 836 south into farmland and open space and needs to hear from the public why that is a terrible, horrendous idea. What is at stake is including this project in the MDX 5-year plan. If approved by the MDX board, it will trigger another in a long list of skirmishes at the Urban Development Boundary; this is where the battle to protect the Everglades has been fought over the decades in Miami-Dade County. Unfortunately, the MDX board is poised to do the bidding of… -
Who is Paying Attorney Stephen Cody To Disrupt Meetings in Miami Lakes? By Geniusofdespair
27 Jan 2012 | 4:46 amStephen Cody Represented Natacha Seijas during the Recall. The big question always comes down to: Who is paying Stephen Cody? He doesn't appear to do work when he isn't paid. He charged Natacha Seijas and her PAC's a small fortune over the years. He has had a shadow client before like he has in Miami Lakes. He tried to get Eugene Flinn thrown out of the District 8 County Commission race. Who paid him for that? No one knows. We have an example of the importance that Cody puts on getting paid in a recent (4/13/2011) Florida Bar "Admonishment" where he was fined about $2,000 for minor misconduct. -
Vote Yes, and Yes Again On 2 Miami Dade County Charter Changes, January 31st. Guest Blog by Vanessa Brito
26 Jan 2012 | 5:23 amLast year, we turned down proposed charter amendments that made a mockery of our needs. This year, we are still not getting what we want, but at least it got better...better enough to vote YES. Most residents do not want to compromise, but in this case, it seems to be a necessary evil. Voting YES will ensure that residents and grassroots organizations will have more time to collect petition signatures for Charter amendments, without having to rely on Commissioners to put them on the ballot. Beyond that, we get to put an end to perpetual incumbency by voting YES on the second amendment,…

Called 'self loathing,' Log Cabin Republicans struggle for respect in the LGBT community
27 Jan 2012 | 2:24 pmBY STEVE ROTHAUS, srothaus@MiamiHerald.com Miami-Dade political activist Miriam “Mimi” Planas says it’s easier to tell her Republican friends she’s gay than to tell gay friends she’s a Republican. “It’s got such a bad image and we’re trying to undo that,” said Planas, Miami chapter co-chair with Eddie Sierra of Log Cabin Republicans, a Washington, D.C.-based gay political group holding its national board meeting Saturday in Miami. The meeting comes at the same time that the nation’s attention is focused on Florida’s presidential primary. Voters go to the polls Tuesday. -

Weekend by numbers: Tag-team parenting, and trains
8 Jan 2012 | 10:29 pm1: Afternoon spent hanging with my Junebug, while....1: Afternoon the Man-cub tried out the dadster's prototype bicycle-pedal-powered train.2: Arms and shoulders that got tired (much needed for still-developing fine motor skills).1: Birthday party I took the Junebug to while the Man-cub stayed home.1: Birthday party I took the Man-cub to while the Junebug stayed home.(1: Time I couldn't bite my tongue and told a party-goer it wasn't nice she stole my parking spot. She turned out to be the birthday boy's grandma. Go me.) -
I say blah blah blah
14 Dec 2011 | 3:06 pmThe so-called blogging experts say you shouldn't write "why I haven't blogged" posts, but I figure you deserve an explanation. If you are coming here in your free time to read my silly drivel and even check in on me (which I didn't realize until 10 minutes ago ... thank you!), then you are true friends.I could wax poetic about writing and life, but I'll spare your eyes. (Save your good vision for wrapping presents, reading holiday cards that arrive in the mail and watching specials on TV.)Basically, I just can't keep up the blogging game anymore -- and trying to do so has ruined my health.I… -
Weekend by numbers: Rain, rain and more rain
30 Oct 2011 | 10:51 pm1: Flash flood warning.1: Closed street.1: Day without Internet access.1: Neighbor's birthday party that was postponed due to the weather.1: Friend's birthday party that carried on ... but was flooded.3: Days of rain. Hard rain.5: Inches of rain from the former Hurricane Rina on already-soaked land. (Um. Did you see that picture above? How does a 5-inch rainfall create a 7-inch-deep lake in a field?)6: Halloween cupcakes.(Yeah, those are Easter and Hanukkah decorations. I thought I had Halloween decorations but turns out I didn't. I don't know how I got a Hanukkah cupcake topper, but the… -
Moved in the stillness
25 Oct 2011 | 9:14 pmAfter dinner, I looked out the window. The sun had dipped below the horizon until all that was left of it were pink and orange streaks making arcs and bubbles in the sky.Without saying a word to my family, I passed through the doorway, crossed the patio and collapsed into the hammock to watch the spectacle of dusk. Just a moment of peace after a busy day.I'd been outside hardly a minute when my husband opened the back door, letting the Junebug out."Mommee-ee-ee-ee!" he squealed as he ran to me."He wondered where you were," my husband said, who stayed inside and closed the door.I pulled the… -
Reach for the stars -- if you don't make it, at least you might get a lamp painted
17 Oct 2011 | 3:43 pmRecently, I broke down and told my husband I want to move.Yes, I mean I literally broke down. I had a weak moment. Probably caused by too little sleep and too much stress. And possibly a little wine."I can't live this way," is something I think I remember saying. That sounds a bit dramatic to me now, but you decide....For starters, our master bathroom has been "under construction" since I was pregnant with the Man-cub (who is 5). Friends, I have no drywall in this bathroom. There are small holes in the ceiling where the room is open to the attic above. There is a pockmarked concrete floor with…

Finding Dr. Right
13 Jan 2012 | 12:26 pmFinding Dr. Right is just as important as avoiding Dr. Wrong says Fort Lauderdale plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Wigoda. You need to choose a surgeon that is right for you, your personal needs and expectations. You want to ensure that you have an unparalleled outcome both aesthetically and personally, as your doctor becomes your “beauty partner,” enhancing your appearance physically and emotionally. One of the first places to begin is with… -
Florida Man Boobs Dilemma, Dr. Wigoda’s Gynecomastia Is a Nip and Tuck
29 Dec 2011 | 12:00 pmBarney Frank’s recent mobs scandal racing across the social media networks brings light to this topic. Men are supposed to have flat chests but a staggering number of men are also going under the surgical knife to improve how their chest looks and to correct a common condition called gynecomastia. Also known as “puffy nipples”, gynecomastia is a condition characterized by excess localized fat and/or glandular tissue development in the chest that is not related to obesity. 21 Dec 2011 | 5:28 pmFort Lauderdale Plastic Surgeon Dr. Paul Wigoda confirms that smoking can make your nipples fall off after certain surgeries. “I encourage all my patients to quit smoking before surgery,” said Dr. Wigoda who pioneered the technique painless breast implants. Cosmetic vs. Plastic Surgery – Dr. Paul Wigoda Tells What Matters
3 Dec 2011 | 3:07 pmIn the land of before and after photos, it’s important to note that cosmetic surgeons and plastic surgeons are not one in the same. The differences will help you when choosing a surgeon for a procedure. On the surface, it may seem like there is very little difference. Cosmetic surgery is focused on surgical procedures that enhance a person’s appearance. Reconstructive surgery specializes in correcting body abnormities caused by trauma, disease, birth defects, and other problems. While most plastic surgeons have the training needed to do both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, no… -
